Punters Finally Tame the Rufaro Hoodoo with Stout Rearguard Action
MWOS FC exorcised the ghosts of Rufaro Stadium with a performance of grit and organisation, grinding out a goalless draw against CAPS United in their final away fixture of the campaign. The Punters finally met the venue, which had been a house of horrors this season, with a resolute and unyielding spirit.
The first half was a classic, end-to-end affair, with MWOS arguably carving out the better of the opportunities. Yet, they found themselves repeatedly frustrated by a stubborn CAPS United rearguard that stood firm amidst the onslaught, ensuring the teams went into the break on level terms.
After the interval, the script flipped entirely. CAPS United emerged with renewed vigour, laying siege to the MWOS goal. However, they were met by a man in inspired form between the sticks. Goalkeeper Martin Mapisa produced a goalkeeping masterclass, pulling off a string of crucial saves that preserved the clean sheet and left the hosts frustrated.
While the attacking duo of Nigel Matinha and Arthur Banda probed for a late winner, the ultimate prize was a precious point and a first clean sheet at the venue this season. It was a performance built on the foundation of a heroic defensive display, with Gift Saunyama and Sergio Murambiwa immense at the heart of the backline.
A visibly pleased Head Coach Lloyd Mutasa saw the positive step forward. “We haven’t been playing well at this venue, and a draw is not bad,” he reflected. “We are still second in the league, and every manager would want to finish in that position, and we will take that energy to the final game of the season.”
The point ensures the battle for second spot remains firmly in their hands, setting up a grand finale at the Fortress next weekend.
