Veremu’s Header Fires Punters to Third in Hard-Fought Victory
A first-half header from Billy Veremu proved the difference as MWOS FC ground out a 1-0 victory over a determined Kwekwe United side at Ascot Stadium yesterday. The hard-fought three points propel the Punters into third place in the league standings, a significant milestone in the club’s ambitious campaign.
The match began in a disjointed fashion for the travelling Punters, who were forced to weather an early storm from the already-relegated hosts. Kwekwe United controlled the tempo and enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, pinning MWOS FC back for the first 20 minutes and disrupting our usual rhythm.
However, the quality of Gaffer Lloyd Mutasa’s side eventually began to tell. The Punters steadily grew into the contest, wresting control of the midfield and beginning to dictate play. A flurry of chances were created as the half progressed, with Nigel Matinha, Abubakar Moffat, and the influential Matthew Sergio Murambiwa becoming increasingly vocal in the final third.
The breakthrough arrived at the most crucial of moments, right on the brink of halftime. Rising talent Clive Kwangwari, demonstrating impressive vision, delivered a pinpoint cross to find Billy Veremu unmarked in the area, who made no mistake with a powerful, close-range header to send the squad into the interval with a deserved lead.
The second half was a lesson in game management. The introduction of the returning Tinotenda Mutyambizi provided a vital injection of composure and steel in the engine room, helping to shield the backline and see out the result. Impactful contributions from Wilson Mensah, Arthur Banda, and Tafadzwa Nyabunze were also instrumental in securing the clean sheet and all-important three points.
Match-winner Billy Veremu expressed his delight post-match, stating, “It’s good to score, and we needed the points. We keep going from now on.”
Head Coach Lloyd Mutasa struck a balanced tone in his assessment, acknowledging the result while demanding higher standards. “We are happy with the three crucial points, but we weren’t at our best,” Mutasa remarked. “We could have started the game a bit better, and that is an area we must improve.”
The focus now immediately shifts to a formidable challenge, as MWOS FC prepare to host Green Fuel next Saturday, October 4th, at the fortress of MWOS Ngoni Stadium.
