A Lesson in Timing: Young Punters Punish Jumbo Giants

MWOS FC U19 delivered a commanding performance at MWOS Ngoni Stadium, sweeping aside Jumbo Giants FC 5-0 in a display that combined clinical finishing with the kind of quick transitions their coaches have been working to develop.

Blessing Mazambani led the charge with a hat-trick, Tanaka Maseko added his name to the scoresheet, and Noah Simango completed the afternoon’s scoring from the penalty spot.

The Young Punters wasted little time making their intentions clear, taking the lead in the eighth minute through Mazambani after Dembele battled to retain possession against two opponents before setting up the forward to finish.

The opening goal set the tone for a first half in which MWOS FC U19 repeatedly found ways to unsettle the visitors, moving the ball forward with purpose and exploiting openings as they appeared.

Mazambani struck again in the 23rd minute, working his way into the box after receiving a pass from Maseko on the left before finishing to double the advantage.

Two minutes later, Maseko joined the scoring party, extending the lead to 3-0 and leaving Jumbo Giants FC with a difficult task before the interval.

The Young Punters continued to threaten, with Zhawu Leeroy causing problems through his dribbling and Maseko creating further openings, although some promising efforts failed to find the target.

At the other end, the visitors struggled to contain the hosts’ attacking momentum as MWOS FC U19 went into half-time with a three-goal cushion.

The second half brought more of the same, with the Young Punters continuing to move the ball quickly and stretch the opposition defence.

Mazambani completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute, getting on the end of a pass from Zhawu on the right and firing home to make it 4-0.

Goalkeeper Guranungo Rashy also had his moment, producing a stunning save from a Jumbo Giants FC free kick in the 73rd minute to preserve the clean sheet.

Noah Simango then put the finishing touch on the afternoon in the 87th minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot after Valentine Zvomuya was brought down inside the box.

The final whistle confirmed a 5-0 victory, with Mazambani’s treble, Maseko’s contribution and Simango’s late penalty reflecting the range of threats in the Young Punters’ attack.

Standing in for absent head coach Wonder Ngoko, Coach Primrose Serima expressed her satisfaction with both the result and the team’s execution of their training-ground work.

“I’m very happy with the result, the boys played according to the way we trained,” Serima said.

She explained that improving the team’s transitions had been a major focus in preparation for the match, particularly after identifying slowness in that area as something they needed to address.

“We were working more on our transitions.

“Our transitions used to be slow, now they are quick.

“The opponents’ reaction was slow, and we capitalised on that.”

The performance offered a clear demonstration of that improvement, with MWOS FC U19 repeatedly turning possession into forward movement before Jumbo Giants FC could reorganise.

For the Young Punters, the five-goal victory was not simply a matter of putting chances away, but also evidence of their ability to translate training into execution when it mattered.
