Finding Their Shooting Boots: Clinical Young Punters Put Marere to the sword to end the barren run.
After weeks of dominating possession but lacking that clinical finish in the final third, MWOS FC U19 finally found their shooting boots to secure a highly deserved 2-0 victory over Marere FC at MWOS Ngoni Stadium on Sunday.
The young punters trotted onto the pitch desperate to halt a highly frustrating run of form.
While previous outings had shown massive promise, a severe lack of composure in front of goal had repeatedly prevented the lads from putting three points on the board.
However, the dressing room instantly proved that this afternoon was going to be an entirely different story.
It took a mere two minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock early doors.
Timmy Kushata rewarded a lightning-fast start with an absolutely composed finish, handing his side a dream platform and injecting massive belief throughout the squad.
Rather than parking the bus to protect their slender advantage, the Young Punters ruthlessly dictated proceedings through patient build-up play and incredibly intelligent movement off the ball.
Kennedy Rekanani, Walter Five, and Pardon Nyandoro were the absolute masters of the engine room, completely overrunning their opposite numbers in the middle of the park.
Out wide, Tanaka Maseko and Blessing Mazambani consistently stretched the visitors’ backline with a string of brilliant overlapping runs and neat combination play.
The hosts nearly doubled their lead when Maseko and Mazambani linked up superbly down the right flank.
Unfortunately, the resulting dangerous cross flashed right across the face of the six-yard box without a single player gambling for the tap-in.
Moments later, Rekanani put a wicked corner right into the mixer, prompting Kean Maravanyika to attack the delivery aggressively.
The towering midfielder showed immense bravery, ultimately colliding with the opposition goalkeeper while contesting the aerial duel.
Marere only threatened sporadically against the run of play, coming closest when a venomous long-range piledriver rattled the corner of the crossbar.
The hosts carried their high-octane intensity straight into the second half.
Leeroy Zhawu began whipping in a series of incredibly dangerous deliveries from the wide areas, whilst Kushata continued to run the visiting defence absolutely ragged.
Looking to keep the tempo high, the technical bench rolled the dice to inject fresh legs into the contest.
Tendai Chisenzere was given the nod before Prosper Mawoyo and Valentine Zvomuya were thrown into the fray to provide renewed attacking impetus.
That tactical masterstroke finally paid massive dividends in the 79th minute.
Mawoyo announced his arrival in style, latching onto a brilliant assist from fellow substitute Zvomuya to calmly stroke the ball home and double the advantage.
Even with the tie effectively put to bed, the lads continued to surge forward with absolute swagger.
Mawoyo tested the keeper’s reflexes with a stinging effort from distance shortly after opening his account.
Zvomuya then turned provider once again, teeing up Chisenzere, whose powerful strike forced a top-drawer save.
At the other end of the pitch, Tawedzerwa Guranungo produced a remarkably assured display between the sticks.
The commanding shot-stopper comfortably claimed every cross and expertly marshalled a disciplined backline to secure a thoroughly deserved clean sheet.
Following the full-time whistle, Head Coach Peter Ngwenya was absolutely buzzing with both the result and the newfound ruthlessness in front of goal.
“It was a wonderful performance, especially considering we finally managed to score two goals,” the gaffer noted.
“We have been working incredibly hard on the training ground to ensure we start converting our chances,” Ngwenya added.
Those post-match remarks perfectly summed up the biggest positive of the afternoon for the developmental squad.
Beyond ending a barren run of results, the massive victory proves the Young Punters are finally translating their brilliant build-up play into a tangible end product.
