From Batanai to Rangers: Young Punters Prepare for Their Next Test
MWOS FC U19 have little time to dwell on their 2-0 victory over Batanai FC, with Rangers FC now standing between the Young Punters and another opportunity to collect league points.
The win at MWOS Ngoni Stadium saw our U19s move to 40 points after 28 matches, strengthening their position in the middle of the Northern Region Soccer League table.
The victory was not straightforward, however, as Batanai arrived needing points in their fight near the bottom of the standings.
The Young Punters controlled much of the opening half, with Giya hitting the crossbar from distance in the 15th minute before further attempts from Mawoyo, Kushata and Mazambani kept the Batanai defence occupied.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Nyatsambo delivered a corner into the box.
Handirade rose to meet the ball with a header, and although a Batanai defender got a touch with his head, the ball continued into the net to give the U19s the lead.
Batanai remained capable of causing problems after the restart, but Manomano Takunda dealt with one of their most threatening moments by punching a dangerous corner away.
Giya was also on hand to break up an attack developing in front of goal as MWOS FC U19 protected their advantage.
With the match entering its final stages, Valentine Zvomuya was introduced from the bench.
The substitute eventually made the difference in the 89th minute, receiving from a Mawoyo assist before sending his marker the wrong way and calmly finishing to make it 2-0.
For Head Coach Wonder Ngoko, the result was also about the team’s ability to respond to the demands of another physically and tactically different opponent.
“It was a tough game against a team that really needed the points, but we adjusted well from the game against Scottland and managed to get the result,” said Ngoko.
The focus now shifts to Rangers FC this coming Sunday, 6 September, with the Young Punters set to continue their league campaign against them at Chinhoyi Stadium.
The latest standings place MWOS U19 in 11th position, while Rangers sit 15th, with both sides having plenty to play for as the league season approaches its closing stages.
Rangers will also provide a familiar challenge for the Young Punters, having taken a 3-1 victory when the two teams met earlier in the season.
That result gives our U19s another reason to approach the return fixture with determination, particularly with the opportunity to put the previous meeting behind them.
The Rangers fixture will also test whether the U19s can carry the adaptability they showed against Batanai into another important league encounter.
With the season moving towards its final stretch, every point carries greater significance.
The Young Punters now have Rangers in their sights, with Chinhoyi Stadium set to host another chapter in the campaign.
