Late Heartbreak at Ascot: TelOne Equaliser Denies MWOS FC Maximum Points

MWOS FC were ultimately forced to settle for a point on the road after a late TelOne equaliser cancelled out Aristotle Manyamba’s brilliant first-half header at Ascot Stadium.

The lads set their stall out early doors, with Marcelline Mlilo spotting the opposition goalkeeper off his line in just the second minute and attempting an audacious lob from distance that sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

Reginald Chinemo then tested the keeper’s concentration in the seventh minute, firing a cheeky long-range free-kick straight into the shot-stopper’s grateful arms.

That relentless early pressure quickly forced the first corner of the tie, though the hosts managed to desperately scramble the danger away.

The inevitable breakthrough finally arrived in the 12th minute following a sweeping attacking move.

Innocent Zambezi picked out Manyamba in acres of space, and the forward produced a clinical finish, burying a free header easily past the keeper to put the Punters 1-0 up.

Following the opener, the squad immediately found their rhythm, stroking the ball around the park beautifully and entirely dictating the tempo of the fixture.

A fierce battle for possession ensued in the engine room as the half wore on, with the punters maintaining a vital edge over a TelOne side desperately throwing bodies forward.

Club captain Tafadzwa Nyabunze proved his immense worth on the half-hour mark, standing incredibly firm as the last line of defence.

The skipper expertly mopped up a dangerous TelOne attack, ensuring an easy collection for Tedious Baye between the sticks.

Thanks to that rock-solid defensive shape, the lads headed down the tunnel at the interval with a thoroughly deserved advantage.

The second half began with a massive let-off for the hosts after Arthur Banda embarked on a brilliant, driving run before perfectly squaring the ball to Mlilo inside the penalty area.

Left with only the keeper to beat from point-blank range, Mlilo unfortunately leaned back and completely skied his golden opportunity over the bar.

Looking to keep the pressure on, Brandon Mpofu put it right in the mixer from a wide free-kick in the 55th minute, but the delivery was decisively punched clear.

Sensing heavy legs, the dugout opted to shuffle the pack just past the hour mark, introducing Tinotenda Mutyambizi and Dawid Ndeunyema in place of Malvern Mudzuka and Mlilo.

The tactical tweaks continued in the 71st minute as Billy Veremu was thrown into the fray to relieve the goalscorer, Manyamba.

Shortly after, former TelOne prodigy Principe Magondo was introduced alongside Mathew Sergio Murambiwa, replacing Clive Kwangwari and Banda to inject fresh attacking impetus against his former employers.

However, disaster struck in the 80th minute when TelOne finally managed to breach the Punters’ rearguard to level the scoreline.

Following the equaliser, the closing stages descended into a frantic period of squeaky bum time.

Despite pushing high up the pitch and desperately searching for a late winner, the visitors simply could not find a way through the hosts’ low block.

When the man in the middle blew the full-time whistle, the lads were left to rue their missed second-half opportunities, walking away from Ascot with a hard-fought but bittersweet 1-1 draw.
