MWOS FC Juniors Advance in Munhumutapa Junior Tournamment
The Munhumutapa Junior Tournament Mashwest qualifiers were held on Tuesday, 25 August, at St Eric’s School Ground, bringing together young footballers from across the district in a competitive platform focused on talent identification and player development.
The tournament featured two groups, with six teams in each group. Following the completion of the vetting process, action got underway across the various age groups.
In the girls’ section, MWOS FC Queens Juniors automatically secured first place and qualification to the next stage of the tournament in Chinhoyi. The Queens Juniors were the only team to turn up for the girls’ competition, earning them an automatic place at the next level.
Attention then shifted to the boys’ competition, where MWOS FC U16 opened their campaign against Tripple C U16. The young Punters progressed with a 2-1 win, with Anel Antonio and Blessing Milanzi getting on the scoresheet for MWOS.
MWOS FC U14 also faced Tripple C U14 but initially suffered a 1-0 defeat. However, Tripple C U14 were subsequently disqualified from the tournament for an age-related violation. As a result, the points from their knockout-stage matches were awarded to the respective opponents, handing MWOS FC U14 three points and allowing them to progress.
In the quarter-finals, the MWOS FC U16 side faced Soccer Montana Academy and played out a 1-1 draw, while the U14s produced a positive result against their opponents, securing victory through goals from M’Clarren Chicheko and Essa Faida.
Both MWOS sides advanced to the semi-finals, setting up another opportunity to compete for a place at the next stage.
The U14s faced Golden Stars Academy in a tightly contested encounter. Neither side could find the breakthrough during regulation time as the match ended 0-0, forcing a penalty shootout. Golden Stars Academy prevailed 4-2 on penalties to book their place at the next level in Chinhoyi, while MWOS FC U14 finished third and narrowly missed out on qualification.
The U16s, however, kept the MWOS flag flying high. They defeated Golden Stars Academy 1-0 in their semi-final, with Thomas Sabawo scoring the decisive goal to secure victory. The result saw MWOS FC U16 qualify for the next stage of the Munhumutapa Junior Tournament in Chinhoyi.
Speaking after the tournament, MWOS FC U14 and U16 head coach Tendai Nyathi reflected on the experience and highlighted the developmental value of the competition.
“I saw some nice football being displayed by the boys, and it was good for player development, not just for MWOS FC players but for Norton as a district.”
The Mashwest qualifiers provided valuable competitive exposure for the young MWOS players, with both teams demonstrating resilience, attacking intent and composure throughout the tournament. While the U16s secured their passage to the next stage, the U14s also gained valuable experience from a tournament that continues to provide an important pathway for junior talent development.
MWOS FC will now turn its attention to the next stage in Chinhoyi, where the U16s and Queens Juniors will look to continue their progress and represent the club with distinction.
