MWOS FC Queens Bow Out of Munhumutapa Challenge Cup After Gallant Effort

MWOS FC Queens’ journey in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday, May 30, at Ellis Robins Sports Club after the team narrowly missed out on qualification for the next round.

The Queens entered the tournament with high hopes and began their campaign against Shedza 1 Ladies FC in a closely contested encounter. The match got off to a difficult start for MWOS FC Queens as they conceded in the 12th minute, forcing them to chase the game early on. However, the team showed great character and resilience, refusing to allow the setback to disrupt their game plan. Their determination was rewarded when Merian Genti produced a moment of quality in the 34th minute from a direct free kick, sending the ball straight into the net to level the scores. The goal lifted the Queens and they continued to search for a winner, but both sides remained deadlocked as the match ended 1-1, with each team collecting a point.

The draw meant that qualification would be decided in the final round of matches, where MWOS FC Queens faced Black Mambas FC. Knowing that a positive result could secure progression to the knockout stages, the Queens approached the match with confidence and determination. Unfortunately, Black Mambas FC struck first, finding the back of the net in the 15th minute to take an early lead. Despite the setback, MWOS FC Queens continued to battle and created several attacking opportunities throughout the match. The players showed commitment, discipline, and an unwavering desire to get back into the game, but they were unable to find the crucial equaliser.

When the final whistle sounded, the 1-0 defeat left the Queens’ qualification hopes hanging in the balance. With both MWOS FC Queens and Shedza 1 Ladies FC having accumulated the same number of points, progression to the next round was ultimately determined by goal difference. Shedza 1 Ladies FC advanced after finishing with a superior 3 goal tally, having scored more goals during the tournament, while the Queens’ lower number of 1 goal scored proved costly. Despite matching their rivals on points, MWOS FC Queens were eliminated from the competition on goal difference, bringing an end to their Munhumutapa Challenge Cup campaign.

Although the outcome was disappointing, the tournament showcased the fighting spirit and determination within the MWOS FC Queens squad. The players remained competitive in every match and demonstrated their ability to respond positively to adversity. Their performances reflected a team that continues to grow and develop, with several players stepping up in crucial moments throughout the competition.

Speaking after the match, Head Coach Primrose Serima remained positive despite the elimination, emphasizing the importance of learning from the experience.

“We take the defeat as a lesson and an opportunity to rectify all the mistakes we made today so that we can be better going forward. The girls were determined and gave everything on the pitch, but unfortunately we failed to score the goals that would have helped us qualify for the next round. We keep our chins up, remain focused, and start preparing for our next opponent,” said Serima.

While the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup journey has come to an end, MWOS FC Queens will take valuable lessons from the tournament as they continue to build towards future competitions. The team’s resilience, unity, and commitment remain strong, and they will now turn their attention to upcoming fixtures with the aim of returning stronger and more determined than ever.
