MWOS FC U17 Share the Spoils with G. Zone FC at Home
MWOS FC U17 were held to a goalless draw by G. Zone FC in a ZIFA Mash West League encounter at MWOS Ngoni Stadium on Sunday.
The Young Punters produced an encouraging display and created the better opportunities throughout the match but were unable to find the decisive breakthrough.
The home side started brightly, with Admire Mangoma providing an early attacking spark as he delivered an inviting cross from the right, although no teammate could apply the finishing touch.
At the other end, the defence remained alert when G. Zone threatened from a corner, with Crespo Mbiriri producing an important clearance to keep the visitors at bay.
Rian Zibopa was equally influential down the flank, combining composure and confidence on the ball while frequently driving the team forward.
The U17s continued to threaten through Munyaradzi Chibvongodze, whose creativity, movement and determination caused constant problems for the G. Zone defence throughout the afternoon.
A superb through ball from Chibvongodze released Gift Mafukidze on goal, but the visiting goalkeeper recovered well to make an impressive double save.
Chibvongodze later forced another sharp stop with a powerful effort from a tight angle before seeing another promising run on the right flank halted by the G. Zone defence.
Zibopa also showcased his dribbling ability by beating two defenders before setting up Mangoma, whose effort sailed over the crossbar.
The Young Punters returned from the break with the same attacking intent and continued to push for the opening goal.
Zibopa delivered another dangerous corner early in the second half, while Chibvongodze combined well with Tadiwa Zhou, whose intelligent run and delivery into the penalty area created panic inside the G. Zone box as substitute Try Ncube looked to force an opening.
Moments later, Chibvongodze tried his luck from long range with a powerful strike that narrowly missed the target.
The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock arrived late in the second half when Chibvongodze unleashed a fierce effort from the edge of the box that crashed against the left upright.
The introduction of Try Ncube and Tinashe Mafunga added fresh energy in the closing stages as the Young Punters continued to search for a winner, but the visitors stood firm to preserve the clean sheet.
Defensively, the Young Punters showed discipline and organisation throughout the contest, limiting G. Zone to very few clear-cut opportunities while maintaining control for long periods.
Despite dominating large spells of the contest and creating several clear opportunities, MWOS FC U17 had to settle for a point at the final whistle.
Head Coach Tendai Nyathi acknowledged the effort of his players after a demanding schedule and reflected on the result.
“We came from a tournament last Friday with the same boys, so it’s understandable that we settled for a point.”
