MWOS FC U19 Suffer Narrow Defeat to FC Oden
MWOS FC U19 were left empty-handed at Chinhoyi Stadium after a spirited performance ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat to FC Oden.
The Young Punters made a bright start, dominating the opening exchanges and forcing the hosts onto the back foot. Despite their early control, FC Oden struck first in the ninth minute against the run of play.
Wonder Ngoko’s side responded positively, showing composure in possession and growing back into the contest. Patrick Manyoni produced two crucial defensive clearances, while Tanaka Maseko’s dangerous corner found Tendai Chisenzere, whose effort was comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper.
The deserved equaliser arrived in the 37th minute when Leeroy Zhawu delivered an inviting free-kick into the box for Kean Maravanyika to head home. Rashy Tawedzerwa Guranungo then preserved parity with an excellent save moments before the break.
FC Oden regained the lead early in the second half, but the Young Punters refused to give in. The introduction of Valentine Zvomuya and Walter Five added fresh impetus, with Five providing an inviting cross that saw Maseko head narrowly over the goalkeeper, while Zvomuya later fired wide before testing the hosts again with an audacious bicycle kick.
Guranungo continued to impress with another important intervention late on, while Gainmore Mareya and Munyaradzi Rekanani were introduced as MWOS FC U19 pushed for a late equaliser. Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, the breakthrough never came as FC Oden held on for victory.
Speaking after the match, head coach Wonder Ngoko praised the performance despite the disappointing result.
“The scoreline is disappointing because nobody enjoys losing, but I’m very pleased with the performance. The boys expressed themselves well and they played with confidence. If we keep performing like that, the results will come. Today wasn’t our day, but I’m proud of the way they played.”
Although the result did not go their way, the Young Punters produced another encouraging display that highlighted their resilience, attacking intent and growing maturity.
