ONE MORE CHAPTER: YOUNG PUNTERS PREPARE FOR SEASON FINALE
The 2026 MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League campaign is approaching its final chapter for MWOS FC U19, with the Young Punters preparing for one last assignment against Shamva Mine FC this Saturday, 7 November, at Shamva Mine Stadium.
With 41 matches played, MWOS FC U19 occupy eighth position on the standings with 59 points, having recorded 16 victories, 11 draws and 14 defeats.
The Young Punters have found the back of the net 58 times while conceding 49 goals, leaving them with a positive goal difference of nine.
Those numbers reflect a campaign in which the side has demonstrated its ability to compete in a demanding league, while also navigating the challenges that come with developing a relatively young squad against more experienced opposition.
The journey has not been without its difficulties, particularly during the opening stages when consistency proved elusive.
However, as the season progressed, the improvements became increasingly visible, with the players developing a better understanding of one another and greater confidence in their combinations.
Head Coach Wonder Ngoko previously explained that the technical team had divided the campaign into four phases, using each stage to assess the team’s development and identify areas requiring improvement.
After acknowledging the struggles experienced in the earlier matches, Ngoko pointed to the growing effectiveness of the players’ combinations as evidence of progress.
That development was particularly evident during an impressive October run that saw the Young Punters overcome Chegutu Pirates FC 4-2 before producing a convincing 3-1 comeback victory against Cranborne Bullets FC.
Against Cranborne, the youngsters demonstrated their ability to respond to adversity, overturning a second-half deficit through goals from Tanaka Maseko, who struck twice, and Taylor Muza.
The subsequent 2-1 victory over FC Oden further underlined the side’s resilience, with Valentine Zvomuya scoring twice after the visitors had taken the lead.
There have also been important individual contributions throughout the campaign, with several players stepping forward at different stages to influence results.
Leading that department is Timmy Kushata, whose 12 league goals make him the Young Punters’ leading goalscorer this season.
The forward has been a consistent attacking threat, offering the team an outlet in the final third and demonstrating his ability to make decisive contributions in front of goal.
His goalscoring exploits have also extended beyond the league, having found the net four times during the Young Punters’ Munhumutapa Challenge Cup journey.
Kushata’s contribution has been complemented by the work of teammates across the pitch, with Tanaka Maseko, Blessing Mazambani, Cleopas Masumbuko and others providing important attacking contributions throughout the campaign.
Defensively, the experience gained by players such as Keith Handirade, Kean Maravanyika and Leeroy Zhawu has also been valuable to a team continuing to develop its understanding and organisation.
Beyond the league, the Young Punters also enjoyed a memorable run in the inaugural Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, reaching the Round of 16 after negotiating several challenging encounters.
Their journey included victories over Chatidhege FC and opponents from the earlier qualifying stages before their campaign eventually ended against eventual quarter-finalists Scottland FC at Rufaro Stadium.
The experience provided another opportunity for the youngsters to measure themselves against different levels of opposition and gain exposure beyond the Northern Region competition.
Now, attention returns to the league and one final assignment stands between the Young Punters and the end of their 2026 campaign.
Shamva Mine FC will provide the opposition in a fixture that offers MWOS FC U19 an opportunity to finish the season with another positive result.
The hosts currently occupy 20th position on the standings with 41 points, while the Young Punters sit comfortably higher in eighth place.
However, the occasion calls for the same concentration and application that have been important throughout the campaign, with the final 90 minutes providing an opportunity to add one more result to the season’s record.
For the Young Punters, this is about more than simply completing the fixture list.
It is an opportunity to reward the work invested throughout the year, carry the lessons of a demanding campaign into the future and finish with a performance that reflects the progress made along the way.
One final assignment awaits, and the Young Punters will be determined to make it count.
