Punters Seek Cup Progression and Redemption Against Herentals at MWOS Ngoni Stadium
Cup football returns to Norton this weekend as our MWOS FC senior squad prepares to host Herentals College FC in the Round of 32 of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup. The highly anticipated fixture is set for this Saturday, 8 August, at MWOS Ngoni Stadium, offering the Punters a golden opportunity to secure a spot in the last 16 of the prestigious competition.
We head into this cup tie riding a wave of renewed confidence following a strong run of recent form. The boys have collected an impressive eight points from a possible twelve in our last four outings, securing two vital wins and two draws. This resurgence comes as a massive relief, successfully snapping a prior five-game winless streak.
Furthermore, those two recent draws were far from a true reflection of our dominance on the pitch. The squad commanded the tempo and had the matches firmly under control, dropping points only due to a string of unfortunate missed chances in front of goal. The attacking rhythm and tactical structure are clearly falling into place at the perfect time.
Saturday’s clash carries an extra layer of motivation. Herentals College handed us a narrow 1-0 defeat at MWOS Ngoni Stadium earlier this year during league action. Meeting for a second time, now in a high-stakes knockout format, provides our boys with the perfect platform to exact revenge and defend our home turf, all while punching our ticket to the next round.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, Head Coach Lloyd Mutasa emphasised the squad’s focus and the respect they hold for the opposition.
“We are always ready for Matchday,” Mutasa stated. “I always say there are no small teams in our league, and we will treat Herentals with the respect we offer any other team, meaning we will go out there and treat this game with the highest of priorities.”
Reflecting on the previous defeat to Herentals at this very venue, the head coach was quick to rally behind the team’s growth and the importance of the home crowd.
“Obviously it happens in football; we lose some, and it’s important to learn from those losses, and I believe we did just that. We wouldn’t want a repeat of that result, and we will go out there and try and get the win. With the fans on our side, I believe it is possible.”
Addressing the morale in the camp and player availability, Mutasa remained optimistic despite a few injury concerns heading into the weekend.
“We have a few absentees. Jeremiah Makangira and Tadiwa Murasiranwa are out due to injury,” the coach confirmed. “We also have issues with Dawid Ndeunyema, who is doubtful for tomorrow’s game, and we will see what the medical team says after final assessments.”
