QUEENS FALL SHORT IN FIVE-GOAL THRILLER
MWOS FC Queens suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Scotland Queens at Alex Sports Club on Saturday, despite a spirited performance and a determined second-half fightback in the Northern Region Women’s League.
Scotland Queens took an early lead in the third minute after capitalising on a rebound from a corner kick. The Queens responded through Patricia Mwanza, who found the back of the net in the ninth minute with a well-struck free kick to restore parity.
However, Scotland regained the advantage in the 12th minute to take a 2-1 lead into the half-time break, despite the Queens showing promising attacking intent and enjoying spells of possession.
The hosts extended their lead shortly after the restart, but the Punters refused to back down. Merian Genti delivered a corner in the 54th minute, which Stella Denya converted with a well-timed header to reduce the deficit to 3-2 and set up a tense finish.
The Queens raised the tempo in search of an equaliser, pushing forward and creating opportunities as the match progressed. A late free kick from substitute Tanaka Samanga tested the Scotland goalkeeper, but the resulting rebound was cleared as the hosts held on for all three points.
Despite the result, the Queens displayed quality on the ball, attacking ambition and resilience, with their second-half response highlighting the team’s continued development.
Speaking after the match, Assistant Coach Cephas Mugurasave praised the team’s performance and progress, expressing satisfaction with the quality of football on display.
“We saw quality football today. Despite the result, this game will forever go down in history as one of the best games the Queens have ever played. We are happy with the development,” he said.
The Queens will take encouragement from their performance as they continue to build on their progress and prepare for the challenges ahead.
We regroup and go again!
