Second-Half Comeback Seals Victory for Young Punters

MWOS FC U19 produced a spirited second-half comeback to defeat Shamva Mine FC 2-1 in matchday twenty of the Northern Region Soccer League on Tuesday afternoon.

The visitors made a bright start and tested goalkeeper Guranungo Tawedzerwa from a free-kick in the seventh minute, but the shot-stopper rose confidently to claim the effort.

Shamva Mine FC broke the deadlock a minute later, taking an early lead against the run of the U19s’ promising opening exchanges.

MWOS FC U19 responded positively and nearly found an immediate reply through Edson Moyo, who beat his marker on the right before firing narrowly wide from a tight angle.

The hosts continued to apply pressure, with Tendai Chisenzere forcing the Shamva Mine goalkeeper into a save from a well-struck free-kick just outside the penalty area.

Chisenzere tried his luck again moments later with an ambitious effort from just beyond the halfway line, but the ball sailed over the crossbar.

The Young Punters continued to grow into the contest and created several dangerous openings before the break.

Dembele Nyamhandu sparked one of the best attacking moves of the first half, combining with Patrick Manyoni before Pardon Nyandoro and Takudzwa Darkeni both came close during a crowded goalmouth scramble.

Manyoni remained a constant threat down the right flank and twice delivered inviting crosses into the area, but the final touch proved elusive.

Farai Dzingai also created an opening for Darkeni late in the first half, although the forward’s long-range effort drifted just wide of the target.

Despite enjoying several promising attacking moments, MWOS FC U19 went into the halftime interval trailing 1-0.

The coaching staff responded with a triple substitution at the start of the second half, introducing Timmy Kushata, Tanaka Maseko and Blessing Mazambani in place of Takudzwa Darkeni, Gainmore Mareya and Edson Moyo.

The changes had an immediate impact as the U19s were awarded a penalty within two minutes of the restart.

Kushata stepped up confidently and converted from the spot in the 47th minute to restore parity.

The equaliser lifted the Young Punters, who took complete control of the contest with an energetic and aggressive attacking display.

Mazambani nearly completed the turnaround with a well-struck free-kick that was comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper.

Pardon Nyandoro then came agonisingly close to giving MWOS FC U19 the lead when his effort crashed against the crossbar before bouncing repeatedly on the woodwork and away to safety.

The pressure finally paid off in the 63rd minute.

Patrick Manyoni produced an excellent delivery from the right flank, and Nyandoro rose highest inside the penalty area to power home a header that completed the comeback.

Kushata almost added a third moments later after racing through on goal, but although he squared the ball across the face of goal, no teammate was able to apply the finishing touch.

Substitute Tanaka Maseko injected fresh energy into the attack with several lively runs down the flanks, repeatedly stretching the Shamva Mine defence and creating dangerous moments.

Maseko also came close on a number of occasions, with one late opportunity narrowly missing the target after he had found space inside the penalty area.

At the other end, Keith Handirade produced an outstanding defensive display, making a crucial tackle to halt a dangerous Shamva Mine attack before Tawedzerwa denied the visitors with a comfortable save from a long-range effort.

Ryan Chapfika also played his part defensively with a vital block late in the match to preserve MWOS FC U19’s slender advantage.

The Young Punters managed the closing minutes professionally before the referee brought the contest to an end, sealing an impressive comeback victory that highlighted the side’s resilience and determination.

Speaking after the match, coach Blessing acknowledged his side’s slow start but praised their response after the interval.

“We started slowly, which can be attributed to the game starting late, but after conceding, we came back with a drive for a goal after making changes at halftime,” he said.
