Stalemate at MWOS Ngoni: MWOS FC Share the Spoils in a Draw
MWOS FC were forced to settle for a point after a proper end-to-end scrap culminated in a 0-0 draw at MWOS Ngoni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors looked to test the waters early doors, winning a dangerous free-kick just outside the penalty area in the fourth minute.
However, the resulting direct effort was absolutely no trouble for Tedious Baye between the sticks, who comfortably parried the ball away to safety.
We immediately hit them on the counter, with Clive Kwangwari brilliantly ghosting behind the visitors’ backline to fizz a threatening cross into the danger area.
Arthur Banda was lurking at the back post ready to provide a clinical finish, but a retreating defender managed to scrape the ball clear just in the nick of time.
Dawid Ndeunyema then decided to start putting it in the mixer, launching a trademark long throw straight into the box that forced a panicked clearance out for a corner.
The visitors earned themselves another set-piece opportunity on the edge of the box in the 12th minute, but the fiercely struck effort cannoned harmlessly off our defensive wall.
A quarter of an hour in, Innocent Zambezi spotted Ndeunyema making a darting run and whipped an absolutely delicious ball into the penalty area.
The opposition shot-stopper managed to get two hands on it, though he nearly committed an absolute howler by almost fumbling the ball over his own goal line.
There was a brief moment of squeaky bum time for the home faithful when Baye went down after taking a heavy knock.
Fortunately, our resilient number one quickly dusted himself off to carry on with proceedings.
Searching for the opener, Reginald Chinemo orchestrated a cheeky set-piece routine, laying it off to Aristotle. Manyamba, who quickly whipped a cross into the grateful arms of the keeper.
As the interval approached, the lads cranked up the pressure and began pegging the visitors back into their own third.
Brandon Mpofu unleashed a venomous strike at goal, but a desperate defender threw his body on the line to produce a heroic block.
The rebound fell perfectly to Tinotenda Mutyambizi, who unfortunately leaned back and sent his first-time effort sailing into the stands.
Moments later, Kwangwari teed up Manyamba on the edge of the area, but his powerful drive also cleared the crossbar.
Despite thoroughly dominating the closing stages of the half, both sides headed down the tunnel at the break with the deadlock yet to be broken.
The gaffer opted to shuffle the pack ahead of the second forty-five, introducing Billy Veremu and Malvern Mudzuka in place of Mutyambizi and Manyamba to inject some fresh legs.
Nine minutes after the restart, Baye proved his immense worth with a sensational piece of goalkeeping to deny the visitors heavily against the run of play.
Left one-on-one with the advancing striker, Baye made himself incredibly big, ultimately forcing the attacker to rush his lines and sky the ball over the bar.
Looking to seize the initiative, the technical bench rolled the dice again in the 57th minute, bringing on Godfrey Manase to replace Valentine Katsande.
The tactical tweaks continued shortly after the hour mark, with Principe Magondo entering the fray to relieve a hard-working Ndeunyema.
The home crowd finally erupted in the 75th minute when Arthur Banda brilliantly bundled the ball into the back of the net.
However, the joyous celebrations were immediately cut short as the referee spotted a handball in the build-up and harshly awarded a free-kick to the visitors.
Making a final push for a late winner, Wilson Mensah was thrown into the mix in the 77th minute to replace Mpofu.
Ultimately, neither side could find the elusive breakthrough, and the referee’s final whistle confirmed a goalless stalemate in a fixture that featured absolutely everything but the finishing touch.
The point leaves MWOS FC sitting in ninth place on the league table after eighteen rounds of fixtures.
The squad’s record now stands at six wins, eight draws, and four defeats for the campaign.
Defensively, the backline has remained relatively tight with just 12 goals conceded, while the attacking unit will be looking to build on their tally of 16 goals scored as the season progresses.
