The Punters Conquer the Capital
MWOS FC made history at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday, securing a memorable 2-0 victory over Herentals FC to record the club’s first-ever win at the iconic Harare venue.
The Punters arrived with a clear intent to make their mark, taking the initiative from the opening whistle and putting the Herentals defence under early pressure.
Nigel Makumbe was among the first to test the opposition goalkeeper, seeing his third-minute free-kick saved before continuing to threaten as MWOS FC enjoyed a promising start.
Despite an evenly contested opening period, the Punters maintained their attacking intent, pushing forward in search of the breakthrough while remaining patient in their approach.
Malvern Mudzuka came close to opening the scoring in the 34th minute when his low delivery into the box found Zambezi, whose clever flick towards goal was kept out by the Herentals goalkeeper.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 40th minute, with Mudzuka rising superbly to head home and give MWOS FC a deserved lead.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Punters struck again just three minutes later as Wilson Mensah found the back of the net in the 43rd minute to double the advantage and leave the visitors in a commanding position at the interval.
MWOS FC returned for the second half determined to protect their lead while continuing to dictate the tempo of the contest.
Even with a two-goal cushion, the Punters showed no signs of easing off, maintaining their pressing intensity and looking to keep possession as Herentals searched for a way back into the game.
The technical team introduced fresh legs in the second half, with Aristotle Manyamba and Billy Veremu replacing Nigel Makumbe and Clive Kwangwari in the 63rd minute.
Marcelline Mlilo subsequently came on for Mensah in the 78th minute, while Ethan Tamson and Leone Chikuwanyanga were introduced in the 88th minute for Mudzuka and Arthur Banda as MWOS FC managed the closing stages.
The Punters remained disciplined to see out the contest, protecting their advantage until the final whistle and confirming a significant milestone in the club’s journey.
Beyond the three points, the victory carried special meaning for MWOS FC, marking the first time the club has conquered Rufaro Stadium with a win.
Goals from Mudzuka and Mensah proved decisive in a performance that combined attacking purpose with the composure required to secure an important result on the road.
For the Punters, Saturday’s triumph was more than just another victory, it was a statement of progress and a moment to celebrate as the club etched its name into a new chapter of its history.
