
Young Punters Earn Valuable Point Against Chegutu Pirates, Set Sights on Cranborne Bullets
MWOS FC U19 produced another spirited away performance as they battled to a 1-1 draw against Chegutu Pirates at Pfupajena Stadium on Matchday 12 of the Northern Region Soccer League campaign.
In a fiercely contested encounter, the Young Punters showcased maturity, resilience and quality in equal measure, standing toe-to-toe with the hosts in a match that demanded concentration from the opening whistle to the final seconds.
The visitors settled into the contest well despite the hostile atmosphere, with goalkeeper Tawedzerwa Rashy called into action early on. The shot-stopper produced an excellent save from a dangerous free-kick inside the opening ten minutes to keep the scores level and provide a platform for his teammates to grow into the game.
As the first half progressed, MWOS FC U19 increasingly asserted themselves and were rewarded shortly before the interval. Forward Farai Dzingai found the breakthrough in the 43rd minute, finishing off a well-worked move to give the Young Punters a deserved lead. The goal capped an impressive opening half from the U19 side, who carried a 1-0 advantage into the dressing room.
After the restart, MWOS FC U19 continued to show discipline and organisation as they sought to protect their lead. Coach Ngoko turned to his bench to maintain the team’s intensity, introducing Gainmore Mareya for Timothy Kushata before later bringing on Pardon Nyandoro in place of Walter Five. Dembele Nyamhandu was also introduced during the latter stages as the visitors looked to see out the contest.
Chegutu Pirates eventually found a route back into the game, levelling matters in the second half to set up a tense finale. Despite growing pressure from the hosts and a heated atmosphere around the stadium, the Young Punters remained composed and continued to compete for every ball.
Keith Handirade was shown a yellow card during the closing stages as the battle intensified, but the Young Punters stood firm to ensure they returned home with a hard-earned point from a difficult away fixture.
Reflecting on the result, Coach Steven Wade praised the attitude and application of his players throughout the afternoon.
“The boys played very well today,” Wade remarked. “We take the point away from home.”
The result extends another encouraging chapter in the development of the Young Punters, who once again demonstrated their ability to compete under pressure and collect valuable points away from home.
Attention now turns to Matchday 13, where another stern test awaits. The Young Punters will travel to Commando Barracks to face Cranborne Bullets, a side renowned for its physicality, organisation and competitive spirit.
