Young Punters Fall to Berks FC at MWOS Ngoni Stadium
MWOS FC U17 were beaten 2-0 by Berks FC on Thursday, 17 September 2026, at MWOS Ngoni Stadium in a Division 2 encounter that saw the Young Punters compete strongly but ultimately come up short against the league leaders.
The Young Punters started the contest on the front foot, looking to dictate the tempo through controlled possession and quick combinations in midfield. Their early pressure produced opportunities, with Tadiwa Zhou involved in the opening exchanges. In the 2nd minute, Zhou was brought down on the flank, winning a free-kick for the hosts. The resulting delivery drifted wide and fell to Nqobile Ndlovu, who attempted to bring the ball under control and get a shot away, only for the Berks goalkeeper to react quickly and claim it.
MWOS continued to show attacking intent as they searched for an early breakthrough. On 15 minutes, Zhou again threatened from the flank, releasing a shot that was blocked. Munyaradzi Chibvongodze reacted quickest to the loose ball, but his follow-up lacked the power to trouble the goalkeeper.
As the first half progressed, the match developed into a closely contested midfield battle, with both teams exchanging spells of possession. The Young Punters worked to build from the middle of the park, while Berks FC gradually grew into the contest and began applying pressure of their own.
With five minutes remaining before the interval, Gift Mafukidze was booked, receiving a yellow card as the intensity of the contest increased.
The opening 45 minutes ended goalless, with neither side able to convert their opportunities.
Berks FC broke the deadlock after the restart, putting the Young Punters behind and forcing MWOS to chase the game. Head Coach Tendai Nyathi responded with changes, introducing Takunda Mashava and Nelly Gweshe in the 51st minute for Nqobile Ndlovu and Kupakwashe Mhuriro.
The Young Punters increased the attacking pressure as they searched for an equaliser. Rian Zibopa came close in the 63rd minute after receiving the ball from Mashava on the flank. Zibopa got his effort away, but the shot lacked power and sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
MWOS were dealt another setback when Try Tevez Ncube was forced off through injury, with Admire Mangoma introduced as his replacement.
Berks FC were reduced to ten men following a red card, giving the Young Punters an opportunity to exploit the numerical advantage. However, the visitors remained dangerous on the counter, and in the 70th minute goalkeeper Tawanda Jacha produced a crucial save to deny a dangerous effort from the Berks FC striker.
With the clock winding down, MWOS continued pushing for an equaliser. The Young Punters committed bodies forward and looked to increase the tempo in the final third, but Berks FC remained organised defensively.
The visitors eventually doubled their advantage in the 85th minute, effectively putting the result beyond the Young Punters’ reach.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 defeat for MWOS FC U17, bringing a competitive encounter to a close. Despite the result, the Young Punters showed periods of positive football, particularly in their possession play and willingness to attack, while the match provided valuable lessons against the division’s leading side.
Speaking after the match, Head Coach Tendai Nyathi reflected on the performance and emphasised the importance of taking lessons from the encounter:
“The game was ok, we were playing against the Log leaders, we tried, fell short, and lost but we bounce back from the lessons learnt.”
The Young Punters will now look to regroup, analyse the key moments from the match and channel the lessons from the encounter into their next Division 2 assignment.
